Advanced Understanding of Thyroid Dysfunction

Event Details

Program Description
This is a clinically oriented presentation exploring the causes leading to thyroid dysfunction. True thyroid disease is far less common than thyroid dysfunction. Physiological, environmental and iatrogenic and infectious causes of thyroid dysfunction will be discussed and nutritional and lifestyle strategies will be presented. Thyroid pathology will be discussed to aid in differential diagnosis.

Goals & Objectives:
• Explain that the majority of hypo and hyper thyroid states are not due to dysfunction of the thyroid gland itself, but due to influences that are autoimmune, environmental and infectious as well as nutritional and lifestyle.
• Detail how to perform proper and complete thyroid testing, including commonly understood test, as well as functional immune testing, such as lymphocyte subset testing, stool analysis, and testing for infectious disease.
• Discuss how to differenciate various thyroidal pathologies, such as thyroid storm, thyroid cancer, goiter and nodular disease.

Program Topics
• Review of thyroid anatomy and physiology; the production and degradation of thyroid hormone and poor quality thyroid hormone production.
• The hypothalamus/pituitary/thyroid axis and the peripheral conversion of T4 to T3.
• Proper and complete thyroid testing and testing for autoimmune thyroid disease.
• Lymphocyte subset testing and testing for chronic infection such as Epstein Barr Virus. Overview of immune function testing including imbalances between Th1 and Th2.
• Hypo and hyper thyroid states, pathology, and physiology. Cell mediated vs humoral immune responses.
• Numerous case studies of hypo and hyper thyroid states detailing the laboratory finding showing that the conventional paradigm is often incorrect. Clinical protocols and outcomes will be discussed.
• Overview of various pathologies of the thyroid and the proper use of iodine.
